Engaged Learning in QTSS
Student-Initiated Learning (SIL) Jbryll Jambaro Aquino, 3 ServiceI find it fascinating on how simple it is to earn a source of income, provided that you make a critical and positive decision on where you place your money. Many people have the misconception of investing as a way of "gambling" but it is vital for companies to monitor finance such as crypto currency. Reading the latest news is vital in your investment decision. Is investing ideal for everyone? Definitely. If possible, I highly recommend everyone to try it at least once in their lifetime. | EL Dept: Newsletter WritingStudents journeyed into journalism as they scoured the school for what's in and what's out. They developed their investigative skills as they dived into the latest news and tweaked their tantalizing tales of what goes down in QTSS over a span of three terms. Students expressed exhilaration over taking ownership of their group and individual pieces that were pieced together as a team. They reflected over the experience as one that allowed them to grow a myriad of manners. | Design ChallengesQTSS Design Challenge 1 Each class was given a set of materials as a starter kit to construct the fastest car possible. The event was held over a period of 3 weeks in order for students to have time to tinker, test, and experiment with different setups. This provides the platform for students to learn through tinkering. QTSS Design Challenge 2 This was a design challenge where students are tasked to re-design existing bins around the school. | GEAR-UPThe GEAR-UP programme (Dare2EXCEL, Dare2DREAM and Dare2SHINE) is a key programme, which provides students with a safe and supportive environment to build resilience and opportunities for service and learning. Students in the GEAR-UP programme are supported by teacher-mentors who work closely with the students as they go through the different enrichment activities and serve the community through Values-in-Action projects at the school and community level |

Queenstownian eRaceThis year, we had a record number of students completing a marathon during our first ever e-race. Over a period of two weeks, our students carved out time to walk or run with their friends. Proof that QTSS students always find innovative ways to strengthen their minds and bodies. With willing bodies and engaged minds, our students maintain their fitness while having fun, with a dash of finesse. | Applied Learning ProgrammeOur Applied Learning Programme is a rare synergised effort between Science and Humanities Departments where students internalise the theme of ‘Sustainability’. In Sec 1, the students will learn about Water and Biodiversity Sustainabiliy; and in Sec 2, they will learn about Energy Sustainability; and in Sec 3, they will learn about Food Sustainability. The programme is designed to enable students to experience the issues and propose possible solutions. | Savvy SustainabilityAs the world tries to make sense of climate change, our students learn how to bring about change. Through the Applied Learning Programme (ALP), they learn about issues of sustainability. In Secondary 3, as part of lessons on food sustainability, students practice urban farming. Lettuce is grown from a high-tech farming system, driving home the message that we reap what we sow. | MTL Fortnight 2022The 2022 theme of Mother Tongue Fortnight was Cultural Kaleidoscope. This represents how each culture projects its unique beauty on one another, just like each reflecting surface in the kaleidoscope, so as to create an even more impressive final image. This was to represent our unity in diversity and how each culture (Malay, Chinese and Tamil) makes us stronger as a community. Queenstownians were tasked to be brave explorers in immersing themselves in their cultures through different courses. |
Mathematics ChallengeDespite COVID-19 and safe-distancing measures, the Mathematics department continued to create authentic, interesting and engaging activities for Queenstownians. In October, the department teachers organised Math Quizzes through social media. Students were exposed to intriguing and challenging mathematics problems beyond the classroom, with the aim of developing their metacognitive and problem solving skills. | Historical Scene InvestigationsQTSS History students are self-directed learners, who are adept at research. This year, our students were tasked to look into the historical importance of places. They gain a deeper understanding of historical scenes as well as a better appreciation of historical research and analysis. Through careful study of the past, our students grow more ready for the future. | Community Youth Leadership (CYL) ProjectsOur students are leaders who contribute to the community. Their Values-in- Action projects are self-driven from start to end. Teachers play a guiding, behind-the-scenes role as students actively conceptualise, plan, and execute their ideas in support of a chosen cause. With willing hearts and helping hands, students reach out to the community with love and care. In the midst of a pandemic, they also find creative ways to reach out, with the help of technology. | Performance TasksAt QTSS, our students combine their academic learning with hands-on activities. Our Secondary Ones were engaged in an interdisciplinary Makerspace Module on Friendship, a collaboration between the Design & Technology and English Language departments. Drawing on the design thinking process, students develop empathy for characters in a narrative before they design and build a solution. In this case, Donna receives a letter of apology from Ulys, as well as a nifty, prototyped robot. |
