Joie Chan Le Xuan
Student-Initiated Learning (SIL)

When asked to learn a new skill for the next few even-week Fridays, crocheting immediately came to mind. Seeing the amazing works of crochet animals displayed in the Art Science Museum when I was younger, I was since inspired and saw the SIL program as a golden opportunity to learn how to crochet my own crochet animals. Before starting on my main project, a crochet animal, I did some research to expand my knowledge on this skill. My first week of the SIL program was spent reading books which I had borrowed from the library to learn the basics of crochet making and attempting to create two strands of crochet. The next two even-week Fridays that followed consisted of me learning more basic techniques of crochet making, one of which was making a perfect circle. After gaining more confidence in the skill, I decided that I would use the last few-even week Fridays to finally take on the challenge of making a crochet animal plushie.

With the assistance of many, many YouTube tutorials, along with advice from my more experienced friends, I was eventually able to complete my own crochet animal plushie. Throughout this SIL experience, crochet making is not the only skill I learnt. My thrilling and slightly frustrating journey of learning crochet taught me that crocheting is a skill that might either come to one naturally, or take a great amount of effort, patience, perseverance and determination to learn and eventually master.

Mr Koa Chee Meng

Head of Department PE/CCA

During my 10 years in Queenstown Secondary School, I have witnessed our CCAs grow in stature and perform at a high level. Through the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers and coaches/instructors our CCAs have continuously shine brightly at National Games and Competition.I  also have the privilege to be part of the team to helm our school’s Learning for Life Programme in Community Youth Leadership (CYL). Our CYL has its roots back in 2011 when we were recognised by MOE as a Niche School for Uniformed Groups.

The pinnacle of our CYL programme is the Overseas Service Learning project in Vietnam. In 2019, our students and staff painted floor games such as hopscotch, snake & ladder and badminton court at a Vietnamese primary school to provide the children a playground for their fun and enjoyment.
